Lord Mayor to welcome international students to Leeds Town Hall

Visiting students from around the world will be treated to a taste of local culture as they arrive in Leeds this weekend and are greeted by lord mayor Azar Iqbal.

The annual event at the city's town hall will include a hot buffet offering a true taste of the region and some traditional entertainment from the Leeds Morris Men.

Around 700 new students will be travelling to study in Leeds this autumn, joining the 9,000 or so already there and their civic reception will include a procession ceremony.

The international reputation of the city's educational institutions is thought to be behind the continuing draw of Leeds as a place to study.

The countdown has now begun and every single Indian waits with baited breath for the final verdict on Taj's status amongst the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Rahul Dravid opts out of Twenty20 World Cup

India will have a new captain at the Twenty20 cricket World Cup in South Africa with Rahul Dravid on Saturday opting out of the inaugural edition of the tournament, along with seasoned campaigners Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, to make way for youngsters.

The three stalwarts, in their 30s, made their decision known to the BCCI before the national selection committee met to choose a list of 30 probables, which included out-of-favour players such as Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan and Mohammad Kaif.

Suresh Raina and Munaf Patel, who have also been out of the team for some time now, have been named among the probables announced by the BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah in Mumbai.

E-mail, Internet chats of terror suspects under scrutiny

BANGALORE: The police team probing the Bangalore link of the UK terror plot has begun scrutinizing the e-mail, Internet chats and other communication modes of three suspects -- Sabeel, Kafeel and Mohammed Haneef.

The team, which was working in close co-ordination with other investigating agencies, including the IB (Intelligence Bureau) had begun questioning the immediate circle of friends who had been touch with the trio, as well as their relatives and those with whom the suspects regularly interacted, a senior official, who refused to be named, told.

India will not join arms race: Manmohan

Ahead of the crucial Indo-US talks on the civil nuclear deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Saturday that India does not wish to engage in an arms race with anybody and would continue to maintain the highest standards of non-proliferation controls.


"India is a responsible member of the international community and we have a stake in the evolution of a stable and rule-based international system", he said after giving away the Defence Research and Development Organisation awards to defence scientists and institutions.

Mittal richest person in Britain

NRI Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal on Sunday topped the list of the richest person in Britain for the third successive year with a wealth of 19.250 billion pounds, even as the Hinduja brothers and Lord Swraj Paul emerged as the second and third richest Asians in the UK.

According to The Sunday Times Rich List 2007, 56-year-old Mittal, President and CEO of Arcelor Mittal, saw his wealth shoot up from 14.881 billion pounds in 2006 to 19.250 billion pounds this year.

The wealth of Sri Chand and Gopi Chand Hindujas, Chairman and President respectively of the Hinduja Group, registered a steep increase during the last one year, from 3.6 billion pounds to 6.2 billion pounds catapulting them to the current position.
